Mag Bay

Magdalena Bay, Bahía Magdalena, or Mag Bay for short, is a long bay that stretches for 50-km (31-mi) along the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula, in the municipality of Comondú, Baja California Sur. The sandy islands of Magdalena and Santa Margarita separate Magdalena Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The short distance between these two islands create a narrow channel that funnels nutrient-rich waters from the ocean into the bay and then sends water back out, naturally cleaning the waters that support desert wetlands as well as various marine and shore populations.

Your local experiences in Magdalena Bay are hosted by brothers Gabino and Melecio, who are part of a local cooperative that aims to preserve the natural habitats in the bay. They run whale watching excursions in the winter, when the gray whales come down to Baja for their annual migration. Starting out in commercial fishing, they made the conscious decision to create a sustainable livelihood from responsible tourism. In the Fall, they take tourists out to the Pacific Ocean for an opportunity to witness striped marlin hunting big balls of baitfish. Thousands of travelers come to Magdalena Bay every year to be part of the action. They enjoy the rush of adrenaline that flows on these sardine run expeditions. In the summer months, visitors seek out Gabino and Melecio for birdwatching and mangrove tours.

Some unsolicited advice from us

Book well ahead of time. This gives you a headstart on planning your itinerary as some activities are quite popular and fill up 6 months to a year out. Longer expeditions also need to be organized in advance in order for all the moving parts to work together.

Purchase travel insurance. We may not want it, but we might need it sometime. Unforeseen events, while they make our experience more interesting, can cause financial strain when they affect our travel plans. Get your trip covered and get peace of mind.
