Stunning Sceneries and Ancient Times in the Gobi
Gobi literally means desert, or “waterless place” in Mongolian. The Gobi is actually a collection of 30+ Gobi (deserts) with different characteristics and, contrary to popular belief, only a very small part of the area are sand dunes. Majority of the Gobi are steppes and mountains, wherein its human residents breed native Bactrian camels. The nomads in The Gobi are the most hospitable of them all since they hardly have any visitors.
In addition to livestock, you may see bears, golden eagles, gazelles, and if you’re really, really, really, really lucky, even snow leopards. Some might find marmots a dime a dozen. You’ll also experience one of the world’s most extreme weather conditions with temperatures rapidly changing within a day when you visit Asia’s largest desert.
Put yourself in the shoes of ancient adventurers daring to travel along the Silk Road, with threats of banditry and nomadic raiders constantly facing them. The Gobi desert was an important region for overland trade between China and the West.

Be prepared to camp, stay in guest gers, and guest houses on your Gobi desert tour. Pax Mongolica, which historians refer to as the century of peaceful relations among those who were under Mongol rule, was regarded as a positive impact of the Mongol invasions despite the terror they sparked. It paved the way for the Silk Road to be reopened, increasing wealth and cultural exchange along the trade routes.
As the region stabilized, ideas and technologies in the world made their way across Asia via the Silk Road. While the Mongols themselves were famous for their archery skills on horseback, they were the ones who introduced the deadly Chinese inventions —guns and gunpowder— to the West through these ancient commercial highways.
