Gray Whales and Green Discoveries

Depart from La Paz or Los Cabos bright and early for your 3- to 5-hour journey to one of the first three municipalities established in Baja California Sur. You’ll arrive in San Carlos in time for an early Mexican lunch at a local restaurant.

Your 4-hour whale watching excursion first takes you to Magdalena Bay, where friendly gray whales come up to the pangas to check out those 2-legged land creatures. Keep your eyes peeled not just for whales, but also for sea lions and other marine mammals. Enjoy some seafood snacks when there’s a break in the action. On the way back to port, we’ll take a detour to see bird island, the mangroves and sand dunes. You’ll have some time to go ashore and explore.

The late afternoon finds you arriving at the first of two quaint towns nestled in the foothills of Sierra de La Giganta. Clear waters run through these twin towns, turning them into lush oases. Horses roam freely on the paved road while they graze on roadside greens. It will be an early evening after an eventful first day of your gray whale combo tour.

Breaking dawn

The next day, head out before the break of dawn to hike up to the summit and catch the sun working its magic. The view of the valley being bathed in soft morning light is simply breathtaking. While you’re up there, marvel at the basalt prisms that were carved by nature ages ago. If time allows, admire some ancient rock art before returning to your hotel for a hearty brunch. You will be back in La Paz at mid-afternoon.

We are very fortunate to discover and be able to explore places that still remain untouched by high-traffic tourism. These small towns are inhabited by humble locals who offer genuine hospitality to visitors. While the infrastructure is basic and service levels may not be up to par compared to those in more developed areas, the efforts of the people are sincere. Your patience and kindness would be appreciated. Be prepared to live without internet for at least 24 hours; have a conversation with someone, read a book, or simply enjoy the moment.
