With a territory that encompasses selva, sierras, and savannah, Colombia has one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world. It is a member of a council of megadiverse countries that specifically develop global management plans to preserve biological diversity. It shares the Andes mountain range with Ecuador and Venezuela. The central mountain range, which is the highest point of the Colombian Andes, includes the city of Medellín. However, the capital city of Bogotá is the highest city in the world for its size. The former lies at an elevation of 1,500 meters (4,900 feet), while the latter is located 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) above sea level.

Known as the City of the Eternal Spring due to its pleasant spring-like climate all year, Medellín is the second largest city in Colombia after Bogotá. It has won various awards related to urban development. In fact, the Medellín Metro becoming the city’s pride and joy when it was built in the 1950’s. The government installed gondolas in the poorest neighborhoods, as well as an electric escalator the height of a 28-story building. The latter made the news for being the first of its kind in the world. Comuna 13, one of those poorest districts, is a success story for its resilience and social transformation.

Some unsolicited advice from us

Book well ahead of time. This gives you a headstart on planning your itinerary as some activities are quite popular and fill up 6 months to a year out. Longer expeditions also need to be organized in advance in order for all the moving parts to work together.

Purchase travel insurance. We may not want it, but we might need it sometime. Unforeseen events, while they make our experience more interesting, can cause financial strain when they affect our travel plans. Get your trip covered and get peace of mind.
