Cedros Island is located northwest of Guerrero Negro on the Pacific side of the Baja peninsula. 30 minutes away by commercial flight, you can also reach the via panga shuttle from Punta Eugenia. Another option is to arrive on your own boat. Subsisting on fishing and commercial salt trans-shipment, this island town in Baja California, Mexico, houses workers of the facility and is home to local fishing families.
In terms of flora and fauna, large colonies of sea lions reside on the rocks and in anchorage sites. Endemic to Cedros Island is a certain species of mule deer, as well as four other animals and at least 20 kinds of plants that occur in very few places outside the island. While the dry, rocky landscape receives very little rainfall in general, the fog in areas at higher elevations has allowed some resilient pine trees to grow. These sparse pine forests, which are visible to passing seafarers, were once mistaken for cedar by Spanish explorers due to the large amounts of driftwood collecting on its shores. If not for this incorrect association, the island could have been named Pinos (or pines in English).
